Rohit Sharma ODI Captaincy: In an interesting turn of events, India got a new ODI captain ahead of their three-match series in Australia despite Rohit Sharma being named in the side alongside Virat Kohli.

Rohit and Virat made their respective returns to India's ODI team amid heavy speculations. However, Rohit not being the captain came as a huge surprise for many as the BCCI selectors decided to crown Gill as an all-format skipper, especially ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027.

Fans were quick to react to the end of Rohit's incredible stint as India's ODI captain. Netizens also expected the retirement announcement to come as well, but the veteran batter will be seen in action in Australia. However, there was so much buzz on social media about Rohit and Virat returning to the action once again.

Rohit was last seen in action for India during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which the Men in Blue won in the UAE. Nobody knew then that it was the last tournament for Rohit as the captain of the Indian team.

Having already retired from the T20Is and Test cricket, the veterans won't be playing a lot of cricket, making their selection in the World Cup squad doubtful. Both Kohli and Rohit will have to earn the spot by delivering good performances in the ODI series preceding the World Cup.

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar backed the decision to remove Rohit Sharma as ODI captain and said that it was impossible to have different captains in all three formats, keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in sight. "It's practically impossible to have three different captains for three different formats - at some stage, we have to start thinking about 2027," said chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on leadership change.

With Rohit Sharma's place in the ODI World Cup squad still not guaranteed, it was in the best interest of Indian cricket to name a new captain and give him enough time to get used to the new role.

The right-handed batter Rohit took over the leadership role of the ODI team from Virat Kohli ahead of the South Africa tour in 2021. He led India in 56 matches, winning 42 games and losing 12 matches. One match ended as a tie, while one couldn't produce a result.
