India National Cricket Team Test Captaincy: The Indian cricket team selection panel has reportedly started informal talks with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and opener Shubman Gill about the Test captaincy role in finding a player to succeed Rohit Sharma.
According to a report in Sky Sports, both Pant and Gill are being considered for the leadership position; however, the selectors are divided between the players to finalise their choice.
Rohit's retirement from Test cricket earlier in May left the captaincy spot vacant ahead of the crucial England tour, which will begin on June 20. Interestingly, within a few days after Rohit’s retirement, batting maestro Virat Kohli also decided to draw the curtains on his Test career.
The BCCI is expected to announce India's new Test captain and squad for the upcoming series this week, hyping up the anticipation about who will succeed Rohit.
Earlier this month it was reported that pacer ace Jasprit Bumrah has decided to remove himself from consideration for the vacant spot, leading to the consideration of Gill and Pant as top contenders.
The search for India's next Test captain continues, with Gill and Pant in the mix. However, one selector has voiced qualms about giving the captaincy to Gill, noting concerns that the 25-year-old still needs to cement his spot in the Test team.
What was Rohit's original plan for retirement?
According to a report in Sky Sports, Rohit's initial plan was to retire from Test cricket was to following legendary captain MS Dhoni's footsteps and retire mid-series while handing over the captaincy reins to his successor.

As per reports, Rohit's decision for Test retirement was reportedly triggered by the selectors' stance on captaincy continuity for the England tour, as the selectors were unwilling to have a mid-series leadership transition.
