Middle-order batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer might have to wait a bit longer for their return to international cricket ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. As per a report, the senior selection committee under the chairmanship of Ajit Agarkar is unsure of match fitness for both players.
In a report by The Indian Express, "Both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have recently undergone surgeries for their respective injuries, are working hard to make a comeback to competitive cricket. The selection committee is set to evaluate their fitness reports closely to determine their readiness for international matches. To provide accurate updates on their conditions, Nitin Patel, the head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has been summoned to provide insight."

In addition to Rahul and Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah's fitness status, as he is currently in Ireland, will also be assessed. The selectors are particularly concerned about Rahul and Iyer's match fitness, given the intensity and demands of 50-over games. They want to ensure that the players can perform at their best without risking further injury.
The selectors will also consider the input of the Indian team management in regards to Shreyas Iyer's inclusion, as his return could provide stability to the unsettled number four spot in the batting lineup.
Aside from the Rahul-Iyer situation, the report also stated that the selection committee will also discuss the team's spin bowling options.
"Currently, the squad features Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel as left-arm spinners, while Kuldeep Yadav is a consistent presence as a chinaman bowler. To introduce more variety in the bowling attack, the committee is contemplating the inclusion of off-spinner Washington Sundar for the Asia Cup. This could potentially lead to leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal being left out."

In their quest for a balanced team, the team management is also considering a longer batting lineup, which might result in the inclusion of additional all-rounders in the squad.
