ODI World Cup 2023 Points Table: Australia opened their account in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 as they defeated Sri Lanka to register their first win at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Monday.

Both teams headed to the fixture with no wins under their belt, having lost their first two matches.

With the first win in the tournament, the five-time champions Australia have moved to the eighth position while Sri Lanka are now in the ninth place on the points table.

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka were off to a fiery start after opting to bat first, with the openers Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (78) stitching a 125-run stand.

Skipper Pat Cummins took the job in his hands and removed both the openers to trigger a collapse for the Kusal Mendis-led side. The Lankan middle and lower order completely fell flat as Sri Lanka lost their last nine wickets in just 52 runs.

After a disappointing start to the tournament, Adam Zampa put up a remarkable performance with the ball as he spun a web and picked four wickets to help his team bowl Sri Lanka out for 209 in 43.3 overs.

Chasing the target, the Cummins-led side too didn't have a promising start as they lost the two early wickets but Mitchell Marsh kept going from the other end.

He ended his poor run of form and scored 52 runs before he was run out in the 15th over.

Marnus Labuschagne (40) and Josh Inglis (58) put up effective contributions before Glenn Maxwell (31*) and Marcus Stoinis (20) finished the match in 35.2 overs with Australia winning by five wickets.

Following their triumph, Pat Cummins and company have bagged their first two points on the board. They are currently sitting at the eighth position with a net run rate of -0.734.

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team continues to sit at the top, leading the points table ahead of New Zealand courtesy of a superior net run rate.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have become the first side to lose three matches and are the only team other than the Netherlands to haven't won a match in the tournament so far.

The Indian team meanwhile sits in first place, having an NRR of +1.821, while New Zealand too have six points, but they have an inferior NRR of +1.604.

South Africa are in the third place and will be in action on Tuesday against the Netherlands.

They have two wins out of two matches and have four points in the bag with a brilliant net run rate of +2.360 which means they could leapfrog India with a win in Dharamsala.
