JE Sports Desk:  India's world cup campaign came to an end on this day (10 July 2019) when Kane Williamson-led New Zealand outclassed the tournament favorites men in Blue under Virat Kohli at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The famous run out from Martin Guptill marked MS Dhoni's final ever international innings as the veteran announced retirement in August 2020, almost a year after that disappointing loss.

Dhoni's World Cup semifinal run-out is considered to be one of the most heartbreaking moments in the history of Indian cricket considering the emotional reaction of the former Indian skipper who was keen and capable enough to take his team over the line.

However, it will be a kind thing to say that it was just destined to be not to win the world cup despite having the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant in the batting lineup.

Talking about the semifinal game, Williamson decided to bat first after winning the game as the Blackcaps put a fighting total of 239/8 on the board on the back of his 67 runs and Ross Taylor's 74-run innings. Blackcaps had to bat for two days due to rain interruptions as the game went to the reserve day on July 10 where things turned out not for so good for the Indians.

It was a horrible period of an hour early in the chase for India, having lost Rohit, Virat, Rahul, and Dinesh Karthik inside the 10 overs with the team struggling at 24/4. Pandya and Pant showed some resistance in the middle before throwing their respective wickets to Mitchel Santner.

The pick of the batters was Jadeja who against all the odds put up a show and smashed quick-77 off just 59 deliveries.

His dismissal left Dhoni in utter need of scoring quick runs which he tried for and fell to the brilliance of Guptill from the deep square leg who bagged a direct hit onto the stumps to deny Dhoni a second run, dismissing him for 50.

Dhoni's facial expressions while heading back to the pavilion said it all and for that matter summed up India's performance in the semifinal. The rest remained just a formality for New Zealand as they picked up an 18-run victory to reach the final at Lord's.
