Pakistan Suffer Major Blow After 3rd Test vs England, 11 WTC Points Deducted And Fined 50% Match Fee; Here's Why

Pakistan suffered another major blow after their third Test against England as they were fined 50 per cent of their match fee and docked 11 World Test Championship (WTC) points on Monday.

The primary reason was maintaining a slow over-rate during the third Test against England in Birmingham.

The ICC stated on its website that Pakistan, were found to be 11 overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Pakistan had lost the series opener at Leeds by an innings and 103 runs. They were then beaten by 194 runs in the second Test at Lord's before suffering an eight-wicket defeat in the third Test at Edgbaston.

Official Statement

"Pakistan have been hit with a pair of sanctions for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third and final ICC World Test Championship contest against England in Birmingham," the ICC said.

The sanctions were imposed by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle, along with on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren.

Why Did Pakistan Lose 11 WTC Points?

Pakistan were found to be 11 overs short of the required over-rate after the allotted time and applicable allowances were taken into consideration.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time. The maximum penalty, however, is capped at 50 per cent of the match fee.

"In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, 11 World Test Championship points have been deducted from Pakistan's points total," the ICC said.

Pakistan's position in the WTC standings has suffered a major setback after the deduction. The team now sits ninth with a points percentage of 4.63.

Pakistan have managed only two wins from nine Tests in the ongoing WTC cycle while suffering seven defeats, leaving them at the bottom of the standings.

Pakistan's Next WTC Assignment

Pakistan will now look to bounce back when they host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series in November.

The two matches are scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore and will be Pakistan's next WTC assignment.
