Ranji Trophy: In a spectacular return to first-class cricket after six years, Bhuvneshwar Kumar presented his vintage brilliance in Kanpur during a gripping Ranji Trophy encounter. The seasoned UP fast bowler exhibited masterful swing bowling on a challenging wicket, claiming all five wickets of the Bengal innings in a little over 10 overs on Day 1 of the Group B match.

Choosing to bowl on a green top after a delayed start, Uttar Pradesh faced a quick downfall, with their first innings folding in just 20.5 overs in the opening session. Bengal's Mohammed Kaif, younger brother of Indian seamer Mohammed Shami, shone with the ball, taking 4 for 14 in his 5.5 overs.

However, the spotlight soon shifted to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who orchestrated a dream comeback by securing a five-for, finishing with figures of 5 for 25 from 13 overs, including three maidens.

The 33-year-old, absent from Test cricket since January 2018, dismissed Sourav Paul (13) and Sudip Gharami (0) in quick succession. In a memorable spell, he later claimed the wickets of Anustup Majumdar (12), captain Manoj Tiwary (3), and Abhishek Porel (12).

At the close of play, Bengal found themselves at 95 for 5, with opener Sayan Ghosh resiliently holding the fort with a gritty 37 off 87 balls. He stood as the last recognised Bengal batter, accompanied by Karan Lal, who was batting on 8.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's impactful return has not only rejuvenated Uttar Pradesh's prospects in the match but has also fueled speculation about the veteran pacer's role in the upcoming Test series for India. In the 70 first class matches, Bhuvneshwar has taken 218 wickets with an average of 26.53.
