In a stunning display of all-round brilliance, Mohammed Kaif, younger brother of the illustrious Mohammed Shami, left an indelible mark on his First-Class debut by steering Bengal to a first-innings lead against Uttar Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy Group B match in Kanpur on Saturday.
Kaif, who had earlier received praise from Shami for earning a place in the Ranji Trophy squad, showcased his skills with both the ball and the bat. Bowling a magical spell of 4 for 14, Kaif played a pivotal role in restricting Uttar Pradesh. However, it was with the bat at the number 9 position that he truly shone, crafting an unbeaten 45 to help Bengal secure a substantial first-innings lead of 128 runs.
This remarkable performance comes after Shami's heartfelt congratulations to his brother on making it to the Bengal Ranji Trophy side. Shami's message on social media reflected pride in Kaif's accomplishment and urged him to continue giving his best.
In the ongoing Ranji Trophy clash, Bengal faced challenging conditions at the Green Park as they resumed at 95 for 5. Despite veteran India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar's impressive figures of 8 for 41, Kaif's resilience, along with contributions from the lower order, allowed Bengal to reach a competitive total of 188.
Uttar Pradesh, who had been dismissed for a mere 60 in their first innings, showcased resilience in their second essay, finishing the day at 46 for no loss. Samarth Singh and Aryan Juyal stood unbeaten, trailing Bengal by 82 runs.
As the contest enters Day 3, the match promises an intriguing battle. Uttar Pradesh will aim to overcome the deficit and establish dominance, while Bengal's bowlers will be eager to seize the early initiative.
