IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma's eagerly awaited return to ODI cricket after a seven-month break, which was marked by a disappointing start and short-lived as he was dismissed for eight runs off 14 balls against Australia in the first ODI at the Perth Stadium on Sunday.

Rohit's ODI return was reduced to a footnote, as pace ace Josh Hazlewood's precision bowling proved too hot to handle for India opener.

Hazlewood's cunning seam variation outfoxed the seasoned campaigner as his delivery pitched on the off stump, angling away from Rohit's body, which caught the right-hander off guard, and his uncertain prod sent the ball flying towards the second slip.

The ball flew to the second slip, where the bebutant Matt Renshaw made no mistake, clutching the catch with ease.

The 38-year-old's dismissal was foregone by a testing spell from Hazlewood, who consistently grilled the Indian opener's defences with deliveries outside the off stump.

Rohit faced a torrid over, floundering with the bounce. He missed one delivery, trying to launch it over midwicket, and was whipped on another as it swung away to avoid his edge. Fate dealt the final blow when a smartly rising ball caught the outside edge, ending his innings.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first against India in the first ODI of the series the Perth Stadium in Perth on Sunday.
