Jasprit Bumrah Trolls: India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has come to the defence of ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, criticising online trolls who have been targeting the Indian fast bowler for missing two Test matches against England, in which the Shubman Gill-led side came out victorious.
Arguably India's most potent bowler in the modern cricket era, Bumrah's presence in the playing XI has been surprisingly linked to more losses than wins for India. This statistic has stirred debate about Bumrah's role in the team.
To add fuel to the fire, the team succeeded in both Tests that Bumrah missed – at Edgbaston and The Oval. Bumrah played three of the just-concluded five-Test series in which a relatively inexperienced India eked out a 2-2 draw. The two matches that India won did not include Bumrah, as per a pre-decided workload management plan.
Tendulkar chalked up India's victories at Birmingham and The Oval, emphasising Bumrah's outstanding stats in the three Tests he played, where he bagged 14 wickets.
"Bumrah started off really well, got five wickets in the (first innings of the) first Test. He did not play the second Test, but (played in) the third and the fourth. Again, in (one of) those two Tests, he got (a) five-wicket (haul)," Tendulkar said in his video analysis of the series on 'Reddit'.
"Of the three Test that he played, he picked up five wickets twice. I know that people are discussing a number of things, that we won those Tests in which he did not play. To me, that is just a coincidence," the legendary batter added.
"The quality of Bumrah is exceptional. What he has been able to do is just unbelievable so far. He has been a consistent performer without any doubt, and I would put him right at the top with anyone else," he added.
To fill in the shoes of Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj stepped up and the pacer ran riot on English batters, snaring 23 wickets, playing in all five matches and bowling a total of 185.3 overs.
Despite this, Bumrah's Test record dwarfs Siraj's stats, as the star pacer highlighted his experience and impact in the longest format with 219 wickets in 48 Tests, a notable lead over Siraj's 123 wickets in 41 matches.
