India National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Match Scorecard: India skipper Shubman Gill was forced to retire hurt after suffering a neck spasm while batting during Day 2 of the India vs South Africa Test match in Kolkata on Saturday. It all happened after he smashed a four over backward square-leg as he faced stiffness while regaining his position. Notably, Gill managed to face just three balls before he walked off the field.

Sensing the skipper in discomfort, the physio ran in to have a check.

BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India) also confirmed that Gill experienced neck spasms and is currently under the supervision of the medical team.

"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress."

Gill struck Harmer for a slog-swept four only to suffer a whiplash in the follow-through, immediately clutching the back of his neck.

The incident came in an eventful 35th over after the drinks break, where Harmer had moments earlier removed a well-set Washington Sundar for 29 off 82 balls with a classical off-spinner's dismissal -- the ball drifting and turning away to take the outside edge for Aiden Markram at slip.
