After a memorable tour of England for the five-match Test series, Shubman Gill is high on confidence and will be aiming to replicate a similar performance in the other formats as well.

Gill has had a promising start to his captaincy career as he led from the front with the bat as India managed to draw the series 2-2. Gill was the top run-getter with 754 runs to his name on the back of four incredible centuries. The star batter is now poised to take on a key role in the T20I side as well.

According to a report in RevSportz, Gill is not only set for a T20I comeback but will also be appointed as India's vice-captain for the tournament.

"With Suryakumar Yadav set to be fit for the tournament, which will be played in T20 format this year, Gill is likely to deputise for him. This will not only mark Gill's return to the T20I setup but also enhance his status as a growing leader in the Indian dressing room across formats," the report said.

Axar Patel has been serving as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in the format following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after India's title success in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Notably, Gill's last T20I appearance for India came right after the T20 WC last year during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which was Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as the team's head coach. Meanwhile, India's T20I captain Suryakumar has shown promising signs of achieving full fitness ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup by batting in the nets during his ongoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE).

The 25-year-old Gill has represented India in 21 matches and has 578 runs to his name at an average of 30.42, hitting three fifties and a century in the format. Talking about the Asia Cup, the multi-nation tournament will be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28, with the BCCI being the hosts of the tournament.

India are placed in group A and will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, whereas their much-awaited clash against the arch-rivals Pakistan is scheduled to be played on September 14.

India are the defending champions, having won their record-extending 8th Asia Cup title in 2023 with a dominating win over Sri Lanka in the final.
