India have made it to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 with successive victories in their first three matches, defeating Ireland, Pakistan and the USA in Group A.

The Men in Blue stand at the top of Group A with six points and will be looking to continue the momentum in the coming matches.

Despite coming out at the top in the challenges they have faced so far, the Indian team will be concerned heading forward in the tournament as their experienced batters Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma have had a tough time with the bat.

Amid all the criticism of the opening duo and calls to bring back Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order, the former West Indies captain has backed the Men in Blue to continue with the current combination.

“Definitely, India had the option to play a left-right opening partnership. They went with two great players, two guys who’ve done a great job for India with the bat for their individual franchise as well in terms of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli," Lara said.

“I think they’ve got to stick with it as you just said if you do make changes on top, Virat Kohli has to come in the order a little bit lower and that’s going to upset things there," the 55-year-old continued.

Lara went on to say that it is only a matter of time before Rohit and Virat bounce back with notable performances and added that it wouldn’t be a good sign to make such changes when they are on a winning streak.

"I believe that the combination India is having and India has to back the two of them. At some point in time, they’re going to come good with conditions, the batting conditions in the USA were not the very best. I don’t believe you start making changes especially if you’re winning," he added.

While Kohli registered a surprising duck against the USA, skipper Rohit was dismissed for 3 but India managed to clinch a 7-wicket victory in New York.

Kohli has scored just five runs in the ongoing tournament in the first three matches whereas Rohit has 68 runs to his name on the back of a half-century in the first match against Ireland.

India will be up against Canada in their final Group match at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida on Saturday, June 15.
