India all-rounder Manav Suthar continued his impressive run in the County Championship, taking five wickets for Warwickshire in their eight-wicket win over Essex in Division One on Wednesday.

Warwickshire had a difficult start with the bat and were bowled out for 191 in their first innings. With the match still evenly placed, Suthar stepped up with the ball and claimed his second five-wicket haul of the tournament.

The left-arm spinner first removed Essex’s top scorer Paul Walter, who made 42. He then dismissed former South Africa captain Dean Elgar for 29.

Suthar did not stop there and continued to trouble the Essex batting line-up. He eventually finished with 5/75 from 24 overs as Warwickshire bowled Essex out for 189 in their second innings.

That left Warwickshire with only 133 runs to chase. They completed the job comfortably, reaching the target in the 26th over with eight wickets still in hand.

Suthar continues impressive red-ball run

Suthar has been in excellent form in first-class cricket this season. He made his Test debut for India in the one-off home Test against Afghanistan in June and made an immediate impact.

He continued his good run during India’s Test series in Sri Lanka in August. In the first Test in Galle, Suthar claimed his first 10-wicket match haul in international cricket. He took six wickets in the second innings and played an important role in India’s 165-run victory.

His performances for Warwickshire have also been impressive. Suthar now has 26 wickets from five matches, with an economy rate of 2.79.

His tally is currently better than New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel, who has taken 25 wickets in nine matches for Leicestershire at an economy rate of 3.27.

Sai Kishore makes valuable contribution

In Division Two, another Indian spinner, R Sai Kishore, made an important contribution with the bat for Gloucestershire against Middlesex.

Sai Kishore scored a patient 71 from 131 balls as Gloucestershire fought back after being put under pressure.

His innings helped Gloucestershire reduce their first-innings deficit to just 30 runs.
