Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has picked his former teammate MS Dhoni as the greatest captain of all time. He also rated former Pakistan captain Imran Khan ahead of Virat Kohli when the two came up against each other in a captaincy debate.

In a clip shared by Cricinfo, Dravid took part in the ‘winner stays on’ game, where he had to choose one captain over another. He initially picked Steve Smith over Ben Stokes, Pat Cummins, Arjuna Ranatunga, Kane Williamson, Graeme Smith, Eoin Morgan, Stephen Fleming and Michael Clarke.

Smith’s biggest achievement as captain came in 2015 when he led Australia to a 2-0 Test series win in the West Indies. It was also his first series as Australia’s full-time Test captain.

However, Dravid moved on from Smith when Ricky Ponting was introduced as the next option. He picked Ponting over Allan Border and then chose Steve Waugh when the former Australia captain appeared in the next round.

Ponting And Waugh Make The Cut

Ponting’s biggest achievement as captain was winning the 2003 and 2007 ODI World Cups. He became only the second captain after Clive Lloyd to win the World Cup twice.

Waugh, meanwhile, led Australia to the 1999 World Cup title. It was his only World Cup as captain and also marked the beginning of Australia’s dominance in world cricket during the early 2000s.

When Virat Kohli’s name came up, Dravid picked the former India captain without hesitation. However, Kohli could not go past Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to their first and only World Cup title in 1992.

“For what he did, Imran Khan,” Dravid said while explaining his decision.

Kohli’s biggest achievement as captain was leading India to their first-ever Test series win in Australia during the 2018-19 tour.

Dravid Picks Dhoni Over Imran And Lloyd

The final round came down to MS Dhoni, Imran Khan and Sir Clive Lloyd.

Dravid eventually picked Dhoni as his ultimate choice, putting his former India teammate ahead of two of the most successful captains in cricket history.

Lloyd led the West Indies to World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979 during a period when they dominated world cricket. Imran, meanwhile, guided Pakistan to their historic 1992 World Cup triumph. Notably, Imran Khan came out of retirement to lead the side to their maiden World Cup triumph.
