Following the conclusion of the Durga Puja and Dussehra festivities, the Delhi government has commenced preparations for the upcoming Chhath Puja. A significant focus this year is on organising the festival on the banks of the Yamuna River, a move that fulfills a key election promise made by the BJP to the Purvanchal community.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is scheduled to inspect the permanent ghats along the Yamuna on Saturday as part of the preparations.
Ghat Development And Arrangements
The Irrigation and Flood Control Department is undertaking a multi-pronged approach to ensure adequate facilities for devotees:
Temporary Ghats: Preparations have begun for the construction of 100 temporary ghats at identified locations. This number can be increased as required.
Permanent Ghats: Tenders have already been issued for the construction of new permanent ghats in several areas.
Redevelopment: Existing old ghats will also be redeveloped and prepared for the festival.

Tackling Yamuna Pollution
A primary concern every year is the high level of pollution and the formation of toxic foam in the Yamuna, especially near Kalindi Kunj. While heavy rainfall this year has currently resulted in lower pollution levels, the Delhi Jal Board is proactively taking steps to manage the issue.
Officials have confirmed that toxic chemicals will not be used to suppress the foam. Instead, the problem will be addressed through other methods, including:
- Installation of sprinklers at the Okhla Barrage.
- Deployment of boats equipped with mobile sprinklers.
- Use of specialised equipment to separate the foam from the water.
The move to facilitate Chhath Puja on the Yamuna's banks reverses a ban from previous years, which had been a subject of political debate in the capital.
