IndiGo Flight Cancellation: Thousands of passengers have been left frustrated at airports across the country after IndiGo, the country’s most trusted airline when it comes to time, cancelled over 500 flights, augmenting the flight delays and disruption for the fourth consecutive day. The airline, which operates over 2,300 flights daily and has a fleet of more than 400 aircraft, has seen its punctuality plummet drastically, drawing public ire over the last four days.

The Indian air carrier cancelled all its domestic flights departing from the Delhi airport on Friday, December 5. Amidst the chaos that unfolded at Delhi’s IGI, a video has gone viral showing a distressed father at Delhi airport angrily confronting the IndiGo crew, desperately demanding sanitary pads for his daughter who was bleeding, highlighting the severe mismanagement at the airport.

“Sister, mere beti ko sanitary pad chahiye…neeche se blood gir raha hai. Pita ro raha hai. Flight time par nahin chal raha hai, satta ke naam par satta chal raha hai (Sister, my daughter needs sanitary pads… She is bleeding. Father is crying. Flights are not running on time. There is speculation going on in the name of power)."

Currently, the authorities are monitoring the situation from close quarters. The ongoing four-day ordeal has been attributed to a failure in planning that led to an unanticipated shortage of pilots.

Meanwhile, the Union Government has initiated a high-level inquiry into the widespread disruption of IndiGo flights. This decision came after the Ministry of Civil Aviation directed all airlines, particularly IndiGo, to immediately implement measures to stabilise operations and minimise public inconvenience. A probe has been ordered by the ministry to look into the causes of the ongoing disruptions and identify all those responsible for this fiasco.

“The Government of India has decided to institute a high-level inquiry into this disruption. The inquiry will examine what went wrong at Indigo, determine accountability wherever required for appropriate actions, and recommend measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future, ensuring that passengers do not face such hardships again," a PIB release by the ministry on the issue stated.
