Delhi Air Pollution: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has expressed concern over “serious deficiencies” in the execution of anti-pollution measures mandated under GRAP 3 and 4, pointing to failures by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and other state pollution control boards (SPCBs).

What Did CAQM Say?

According to CAQM’s statement, shortfalls from 7 to 99.6 per cent were identified. These included mechanical road sweeping, deployment of mechanical road sweeping machines and inspections of construction and demolition sites.

During GRAP 3 and 4, large construction sites were hardly inspected in Delhi with a shortfall of about 87 per cent. The shortfall touched 70 per cent when it came to road sweeping.

DPCC and other SPCBs have been ordered by CAQM to check on officers responsible for inaction and begin appropriate proceedings against them.

Delhi AQI Today

Delhi’s air quality improved over the last three days, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 397 on Tuesday in the “very poor” category, down from the “severe” when levels were above 400. Delhi recorded its most polluted January day in the past two years on Sunday, when the AQI plunged into the “severe” category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) daily bulletin, the city’s AQI stood at 440 at 4 pm on Sunday.

Delhi Weather

Delhi experienced some relief from the cold on Tuesday. Moderate to dense fog covered most parts of the city in the morning. Light rain or drizzle is forecast for January 23, along with winds of up to 20 kmph, which may once again lead to a drop in temperature. According to IMD, the minimum temperature is expected to be around 8 degrees Celsius, while the maximum may reach about 23 degrees on Tuesday.
