The Delhi government has initiated the recruitment process for 1,593 long-vacant Senior Resident doctor positions in the capital's government hospitals. This move is expected to resolve a years-old problem within the health department and significantly improve patient treatment and the timely availability of medical facilities.
Addressing The Doctor Shortage
For years, hundreds of posts have been vacant in Delhi's major hospitals, leading to a severe shortage of doctors in critical areas, from operating theatres to emergency services, and placing an additional workload on existing staff. A doctor at GB Pant Hospital recently resigned over this issue.
Key Hospitals With Vacancies Include
- Lok Nayak Hospital (LNJP)
- GTB Hospital
- Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital
- Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital
- Burari Hospital
- Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital
- Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC)
Vacancies
LNJP Hospital: 242 vacant posts
GTB Hospital: 205 vacant posts
Most Affected Departments:
Anaesthesia: 270 vacant posts
Gynaecology and Obstetrics: 237 vacant posts
Paediatrics: 191 vacant posts
Radiology: 104 vacant posts
New 'Single-Window System' For Recruitment
To make the selection process transparent, integrated, and faster, the new recruitment is being conducted under a centralised selection system.
Process: All appointments will be made through a single-window system, chaired by the Dean of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC).
Previous System: Previously, individual hospitals conducted their own interviews, which led to delays and inconsistencies in selection.
Benefits: The new system will improve coordination and reduce administrative hurdles.
A senior official from the health department claimed, "This is the most significant step towards strengthening Delhi's health infrastructure. This recruitment drive was essential to ensure that services in hospitals can run smoothly and continuously."

Expected Impact On Patient Care
Health experts note that the shortage of specialist doctors has a direct impact on patient care, often leading to the postponement of operations and treatments.
Improvements: The appointment of new doctors is expected to increase the number of surgeries, reduce patient waiting times, and largely resolve the shortage.
Timeline: The government aims to complete all 1,593 appointments within the financial year 2025-26.
Goal: This recruitment will not only increase the availability of doctors but also make the experience of receiving treatment in government hospitals much smoother and more reliable for Delhi residents.
