The Delhi Jal Board will lay a sewer line in 11 unauthorised colonies within the Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar assembly constituencies. To this end, Water and PWD Minister Pravesh Verma laid the foundation stone for a Rs 31.31 crore sewer development project in Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday.

The objective of this long-pending project is to prevent domestic sewage from flowing directly into drains, which subsequently pollutes the Yamuna River. This will aid in cleaning the Yamuna and strengthening Delhi's sanitation system.

Pravesh Verma stated that the most effective way to clean the Yamuna is to stop sewage at its source. The lack of sewer facilities in the unauthorised colonies of Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar has been a direct cause of Yamuna pollution. This Delhi Jal Board project addresses that fundamental problem. This project remained incomplete for years, affecting not only the residents but also the Yamuna River.

Funding, accountability, and monitoring have now been ensured so that the work is completed on time and to a high standard. The current government is fully committed to completing this project within the set deadline.

According to South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the project was approved in 2018 and was scheduled to be completed by May 2020. Under its scope, approximately 57 kilometres of sewer line were to be laid, but over the past years, only about 32 kilometres of work were completed.

Consequently, only 5 out of 16 identified colonies received partial sewer facilities, while wastewater from the remaining areas continued to flow into the Yamuna via open drains. The Delhi Jal Board will now advance this stalled project in mission mode.

Under the current phase, approximately 25 kilometres of underground sewer line (with a diameter ranging from 300 mm to 700 mm) will be laid at a cost of Rs 31.31 crore. The project is targeted for completion within nine months, directly benefiting approximately 3,00,000 people who have thus far been deprived of an organised sewer system.
