Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday approved Metro Phase 5A as part of efforts to strengthen and modernise the capital’s public transport system. Under the project, three new metro corridors with a combined length of 16 kilometres will be developed, comprising 13 stations.

The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 12,014.91 crore, of which the Delhi government’s budgetary share is Rs 2,940.46 crore. The project is scheduled for completion by 2028.

Calling the decision an investment in Delhi’s future, the Chief Minister said the new corridors would help reduce traffic congestion and curb pollution. The three approved corridors include RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (via Central Vista), Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj, and Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Terminal-1 (IGD T-1).

Of the 13 proposed stations, 10 will be underground and three elevated. The expansion is expected to enable seamless interchange with the existing metro network and improve connectivity between the airport, commercial hubs and residential areas, while reducing dependence on private vehicles.

RK Ashram Marg-Indraprastha Corridor

The key corridor under Phase 5A is the proposed RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha line, spanning 9.913 kilometres with nine stations. Passing through the Central Vista area, the corridor will connect major administrative, cultural and historical locations to the metro network and link all official buildings in the area.

The corridor is expected to benefit around 60,000 government employees and approximately 2 lakh passengers daily. It will connect locations including RK Ashram Marg (under construction), Shivaji Stadium, Central Secretariat, CCS Buildings, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha.

A total of Rs 9,570.40 crore will be spent on this corridor, with the Delhi government contributing Rs 2,337.24 crore. The project is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and pollution by lowering dependence on petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles.

Aerocity-IGI Airport Terminal-1 Corridor

The Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal-1 corridor will be 2.26 kilometres long and will have one station. Designed to provide fast and seamless metro access to the airport, the corridor is expected to reduce traffic congestion and reliance on private transport.

The cost of this corridor is estimated at Rs 1,419.64 crore, of which Rs 351.86 crore will be borne by the Delhi government.

Tughlakabad-Kalindi Kunj Corridor

The Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj corridor will span 3.9 kilometres and include three stations. It is aimed at improving metro connectivity in South and Southeast Delhi and easing daily commuting for residents.

The corridor will cost Rs 1,024.87 crore, with the Delhi government contributing Rs 251.36 crore.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the expansion of the Delhi Metro is a key pillar of the capital’s overall development. She stated that the existing network, along with the new corridors under Phase 5, will make transport in Delhi and the NCR more efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable.
