The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to open its brand new double-decker viaducts, which will help carry road traffic below and metro trains above, providing significant relief to the traffic congestion during peak hours. According to the DMRC, a total of three double-decker viaducts are being built in Delhi, developed in collaboration with the Delhi government. These structures will carry vehicles on the lower level, while the upper level will carry metro trains.

Double Decker Lines To Open In Three Places

  • The first double-decker has been partially completed on the Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor between the Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar metro stations.

  • A second double-decker viaduct between the Azadpur and Ashok Vihar metro stations is also in the pipeline, which is set to be completed this year. 

  • A third double-decker on the new Golden Line is also on the cards, which is progressing rapidly. 

Bhajanpura-Yamuna Vihar Double Decker Line

  • Length: 1.4 kilometres

  • Route: The double-decker line is part of the 12.3-kilometre-long Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor and will pass through the densely populated areas of northeast Delhi. 

  • Current Status: Construction work on the corridor is complete, and trial runs are underway with safety checks done by the CMRS.

  • The ramp for road traffic is still under construction and is expected to be completed by this year. 

  • Once fully operational, the Pink Line will become the first circular line on the DMRC network, allowing commuters to travel long distances without changing lines.

Azadpur-Ashok Vihar Double Decker Line

  • Length: 2.2 kilometres

  • Route: It is located along the GT Road section, specifically between the Azadpur and Ashok Vihar metro stations and forms part of the 29.3 km Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor, which is an extension of the Magenta Line.

  • Current Status: Construction work on the double-decker line is nearly 70 per cent complete. The line is expected to be completed for the public by 2026.

Golden Line Double Decker Viaduct

  • Length: 2.4 kilometres 

  • Route: The double-decker line is part of the 23.6-kilometre-long Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor, also known as the Golden Line. 

  • Current Status: Construction of metro pillars and viaduct spans is underway.
