The Delhi government has formed an independent expert committee, which will provide independent suggestions, innovative ideas, and practical solutions to address the air pollution problem in the capital. The government believes that the involvement of experts will make pollution control measures more effective and practical.
The expert committee comprises a total of 11 members, including secretaries from the Environment and Forest departments, a representative from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a former chairman of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and experts from prestigious institutions like IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi.
To ensure prompt implementation of pollution-related decisions, an Air Pollution Control Implementation Committee (ICCAP) has also been formed. Its objective is to implement the recommendations of the expert committee and government schemes on the ground in a timely manner.
The committee comprises 16 senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Vice Chairman of Delhi Development Authority, Chairman NDMC, Chief Executive Officer of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, and Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
Officials said that special emphasis will be placed on promoting innovation to address pollution, scientific management of dust and solid waste, strict action against polluting industries, reducing vehicle emissions, and long-term plans to make Delhi greener. Special attention is being paid to vehicular pollution.
The pollution level in the national capital has once again shot to the 'severe' category as the air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 403 on Monday morning. The air quality plunged to severe levels after four days of constant rising pollution in the wake of improvements gained by GRAP-4 restrictions.
GRAP-4 restrictions were implemented on December 13 after the pollution hit alarming levels. On Wednesday, the restrictions were lifted after the air quality improved, though remaining in the poor category.
Some of the restrictions, such as no fuel to vehicles without PUC certificates, are still in force but the pollution has risen significantly in the past few days.
