Delhi Residents will soon be able to apply for and download birth and death certificates directly from their mobile phones, as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) develops a dedicated mobile app. The initiative aims to simplify access to these essential documents, which are currently available through the corporation’s website but are not mobile-friendly.

A senior MCD official stated that the app is in its final stages and will soon be launched. It will also be linked to the MCD 311 app, with a separate download option for convenience. The new app will allow users to apply for new certificates, download issued ones, and make amendments online, reducing the need for visits to MCD zonal offices or headquarters.

The corporation’s integrated birth and death certificate portal, launched four years ago, has already digitised the process. Certificates for births and deaths occurring in hospitals within MCD jurisdiction are automatically issued within 21 days, while non-institutional cases, such as births or deaths at home, require an online application. On average, the issuance time has been reduced from one month to seven days.

Statistics from 2024 show that out of 1,02,737 birth registrations in Delhi hospitals, 11,995 were non-institutional. Similarly, of 1,39,480 death registrations, 48,597 occurred outside hospitals. The new app will facilitate both types of registrations and allow easy amendments to names if required.

Additionally, the NDMC has streamlined the process by issuing birth certificates at the time of hospital discharge. This practice, started at RML Hospital, has now been extended to AIIMS and the Palika Maternity Centre.

From next week, the system will also be introduced at Northern Railway’s hospital and Sucheta Kriplani (Lady Hardinge) Hospital. At RML and AIIMS, 10-12 certificates are issued daily before discharge, while 3-4 are issued at the Palika Maternity Centre.
