In a bid to boost regional connectivity, the government has approved two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Corridors (RRTS) connecting Delhi to Gurgaon, Rewari, Sonipat, Panipat and Karnal. The projects are estimated to be built at a combined cost of Rs 65,000 crore upon the final approval from the Union Cabinet.
The government approval is significant as the proposals were delayed for a long time due to funding disagreements between the Centre and the previous AAP governments in Delhi.
Delhi-Gurgaon RRTS: Project Details
- The new Delhi-Gurgaon RRTS is divided across two corridors, Corridor I and Corridor II.
- Corridor I: Sarai Kale Khan-Bawal, 93 km
- Corridor II: Sarai Kale Khan-Karnal, 136 km
- According to the housing and urban affairs ministry, the first corridor will cost Rs 32,000 crore while the second corridor will cost Rs 33,000 crore.
- “Delhi and Haryana governments are working together in a Value Capture Financing (VCF) model to fund this,” an official was quoted as saying by the Economic Times.
- Corridor I originates at Sarai Kale Khan and runs via parts of South Haryana including key industrial areas like Manesar and Bawal. There are 16 stations along this line.
- The proposed route is aligned along NH-8 and is to include roughly 22 stations when extended further south.
- Like Corridor I, Corridor II also originates from Sarai Kale and criss-crosses the northern part of Haryana, covering major towns such as Sonipat, Panipat before terminating at Karnal.
- The DPR of Corridor II is ready.
- According to the official website of the project, Corridor II is further divided into three sections: Sarai Kale Khan to Alipur, Alipur Samalkha and Samalkha to Karna New ISBT.
