Preparations are underway to build an Inter-State Bus Terminal at the site of the Bhalaswa landfill, one of Delhi's garbage mountains, so that buses travelling from Outer Delhi towards Central Delhi can be stopped there. The Delhi government and the MCD have started exploring the possibilities for this.
The MCD has set a target to eliminate the Bhalaswa garbage mountain by the end of this year. On Friday, this proposal was discussed between officials of the Delhi government and the MCD, and officials have been asked to explore the possibilities. A detailed proposal related to this will be prepared soon.
Connectivity For Five Northern States
According to a Delhi government official, upon the construction of this Inter-State Bus Terminal, buses from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh will be able to halt. This will relieve the pressure of hundreds of buses from Delhi's roads as well as the Kashmiri Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal. By doing so, the Delhi government will take a step forward in its efforts to combat air pollution.
Landfill Remediation And Bio-Mining Progress
The Bhalaswa landfill, located in Outer Delhi, covers an area of more than 70 acres. The MCD is working rapidly to eliminate this problem, which has existed since 1994. The work of clearing this landfill site, which has reached a height of over 60 metres, is ongoing through bio-mining.
The MCD has set a target to completely eliminate it by December 2026. For this, progress is being monitored through drone surveys. Recently, MCD House Leader Pravesh Wahi conducted a site inspection and claimed that the daily bio-mining capacity at the Bhalaswa landfill site has been continuously increased, now reaching 15,000 tonnes per day (TPD).
Land Reclamation And Environmental Impact
This has significantly accelerated the process of eliminating the garbage mountain. As a result of bio-mining, approximately 4.5 acres of additional land at the Bhalaswa landfill site has also been cleared in just three months. MCD sources said that this matter has been discussed in detail with the Delhi government. Its construction will provide relief from the air pollution and traffic congestion caused by buses from other states.
