An RTI has revealed the reality of how buses that had completed their service life, but were approved for use by the previous AAP government to tackle bus shortages, have been serving the public. The data shows that in the last two years, an average of more than 112 DTC buses broke down every day in Delhi.

According to the data, government buses broke down 81,869 times in the two-year period between 2023 and 2024, meaning an average of about five buses broke down every hour, every day, for two years. The data also reveals that between January and July of this year, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) control room received 21,123 complaints about bus breakdowns on the roads.

Depot-Wise Breakdown Data

This year, a total of 8,598 buses operated by various depots in the Northern region broke down.

At Rohini Depot 4, 1,008 buses broke down between January and July this year, which is a decrease from 1,824 in 2023 and 1,249 in 2024 during the same period.

The Rohini Sector 37 Depot saw a significant increase in breakdowns, with 3,014 incidents between January 1 and July 28 this year. This number stood at 686 in 2023 and 1,007 in 2024 (for the period of January 4 to July 28).

Buses operated by the Narela Depot broke down 3,260 times. This compares to 3,140 and 2,970 such incidents between January 4 and July 28 in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

In the Southern region, 8,510 buses broke down between January and July this year.

Official Response

Officials have stated that the public transport corporation is working to reduce such incidents. Earlier this year, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was developed to remove broken-down buses from the road within 15 minutes.

According to officials, 30 Quick Response Teams have been deployed at various locations, and a 24-hour control room has been established to address the problem.
