The Mythological Story of Queen Veeravati

The most well-known story surrounding Karwa Chauth is of Queen Veeravati, a lovely and devoted wife. After her marriage, she fasted for her first Karwa Chauth. She was the only loving sister to her seven brothers. She did not eat or drink anything during the fast, and by midday, she was feeling exhausted. Seeing her weak state, her brothers could not bear to see her suffer.

So, they used a lamp behind a tree to create an illusion of the moon in a mirror and told her the moon had arrived. Veeravati believed her brothers and looked at the fake moon to break her fast. At that moment of breaking the fast, she received news of her husband’s death.

With a heavy heart and deep devotion, she prayed to Goddess Parvati. The goddess revealed the truth to her. She blessed her, brought back her husband, and told her each year to keep the fast faithfully and with patience. Since then, the same fast has been practised and women performing the fast only break their fast when they see the true moon, in true faith and devotion.
