Education Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of 50,000 new Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) over the next five years, aimed at encouraging scientific thinking and fostering innovation among students.
This initiative aligns with the government's goal to cultivate curiosity, innovation, and a scientific temper among young minds. While the Atal Tinkering Lab project itself is not new having been launched under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) in 2016 this expanded effort will see a significant increase in the number of labs across the country.
Currently, nearly 8,706 ATLs are operational in schools nationwide, with 60 percent of them in government institutions. The government's new plan to establish 50,000 additional labs will further support the growth of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in India.
What do ATLs do?
- Inspire Innovation: ATLs provide students with the tools and resources to explore and experiment with STEM fields.
- Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Students work collaboratively to address real-world challenges.
- Foster Entrepreneurship: ATLs nurture an entrepreneurial mindset by encouraging students to think creatively and develop solutions.
- Bridge Theory and Practice: ATLs allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, hands-on environments.
The goal of the scheme is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination, while equipping students with essential skills such as design thinking, computational skills, adaptive learning, and physical computing.
