AI In Education Future: Artificial intelligence (AI) could reshape education over the next 30 years, potentially making many traditional cognitive tasks optional for students, as per the experts at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

At the Askwith Education Forum (AEF) on Wednesday, Howard Gardner, the psychologist and social scientist behind the theory of multiple intelligences, said AI represents "as fundamental a change to education as the world had seen in 1,000 years."

Traditional Schooling Model May Soon Become Obsolete:

Gardner suggested that the traditional model of schooling, where all students learn the same subject matter in the same way, may become obsolete. He said, "The requirement that everyone in the classroom do the same work and be assessed in the same way will seem completely outdated."

Gardner proposed that by 2050, students may need only a few years of education in the basics: reading, writing, arithmetic, and a basic understanding of coding. Furthermore, teachers will act as instructors, guiding students through activities that challenge their thinking, introducing them to new ideas, and helping them find professions that excite them. He said, "I don't think it makes sense to go to school for 10 or 15 years, as we have done."

AI Could Handle Discipline, Synthesis, and Creativity:

Gardner, whose 1983 book "Frames of Mind" described different types of intelligence, and whose 2005 work "Five Minds for the Future" described disciplined, synthetic, creative, respectful, and ethical minds, said that AI would soon be able to handle three of these five disciplines: synthesis and creativity.

He said, "I think most of the cognitive aspects of the mind will be done so well by large linguistic machines and mechanisms that whether we do them as humans or not will be optional." However, he emphasized that respect and ethics cannot be delegated to machines.

The forum emphasized that although AI can handle many intellectual tasks, the human aspects of education such as ethics, respect, and critical engagement are still essential.

Gardner compared this era to the invention of writing and the printing press, emphasizing the historical significance of these changes. He asked, "If the world still existed 150 to 200 years from now, and people looked back on this time, what major changes would have occurred?"
