IITs Placement Report: To alleviate "pressure" on students during the placement season, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considering not releasing the top yearly packages in their placement reports, instead focusing on mean and median wage data.

This consensus was reached at a recent meeting of the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), where topics discussed included the IIT-Bombay placement report from last week, which claimed over 85 offers exceeding a Rs 1 crore yearly compensation. IIT-Bombay amended the number of Rs 1 crore-plus offers in the first phase of placement to 22 in a corrigendum announced on Wednesday, blaming a "technical error."

On January 4, IIT-Bombay announced that the first phase of placements, which concluded on December 20 last year, saw a total of 1,340 offers. It said there were 85 offers of annual salary packages surpassing Rs 1 crore, marking a significant increase from the 25 such offers made last year. The average annual salary package also increased from Rs 23.26 lakh to Rs 24.02 lakh.

The AIPC meeting took place the day after the announcement. As members of the AIPC, the 23 IITs' heads of career development or training and placement units meet at regular intervals to exchange their recruiting experiences and concerns.

The IIT-Bombay report is said to have sparked criticism and debate at the AIPC meeting about the potential impact that disclosing the highest salary figures could have on students, raising concerns about the false expectations it may create among parents, especially in a year marked by overall subdued hiring sentiment, owing in part to the tech slowdown.

IIT-Bombay, however, is not the only institute that reveals the biggest remuneration offers. In the first phase of placement this year, for example, IIT-Kharagpur stated that 20 students were awarded sums of Rs 80 lakh and higher.
