JNU PhD Admissions 2025: Jawaharlal Nehru University has announced its second PhD admission cycle for the academic year 2025-26, tentatively scheduled for December. The admissions will be conducted through various fellowship programs including UGC/CSIR-JRF-NET, DBT-JRF, and ICMR-JRF, providing additional opportunities for aspiring research scholars.
In a separate but significant development, the university registrar has approved hostel extensions for PhD scholars approaching thesis submission. Students can apply for extensions by submitting undertakings signed by their supervisors, chairpersons, and respective school deans, with requests considered on humanitarian grounds.
The JNU Students' Union has maintained its hunger strike for ten consecutive days, demanding reinstatement of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination for all PhD programs. The union strongly opposes the university's decision to exclude recent UGC-NET June 2025 candidates, particularly affecting postgraduate students.
JNUSU President Nitish Kumar credited the hostel extension to their protest efforts, stating the administration was forced to negotiate and release notices during holiday periods. He emphasized that no student should be compelled to vacate hostels during their studies, declaring continued resistance.
The student body argues that excluding recent MA graduates from PhD admissions significantly limits research opportunities for a substantial portion of qualified candidates. Kumar announced that while the hostel extension represents initial success, the union will persist in pushing for complete fulfillment of all demands.
The ongoing protests highlight tensions between university administration policies and student access to higher education opportunities, particularly affecting the transition from postgraduate to doctoral studies.
