Maharashtra SSC Passing Marks Cut:  The Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), in its new State Curriculum Framework-School Education (SCF-SE), has proposed lowering the passing marks for mathematics and science in Class 10 from 35 to 20.

While students passing with the reduced marks will have a remark on their certificate, preventing them from pursuing higher education courses that require knowledge of mathematics or science, they will still be eligible for other higher education courses.

According to officials, this proposal is still in the preliminary stages and will only be finalised once the SCF-SE is fully rolled out in the coming years. However, the proposal has already received positive feedback from academics and school teachers, who believe it addresses the long-standing issue of students' fear of mathematics, which often leads to stress.

"Students who dislike mathematics often choose higher education paths that don’t require it. Many ask why they must study mathematics when it has no relevance to their future careers. This proposal will make it easier for such students to pass mathematics and science in Class 10, which is a great relief," said a teacher from BMC schools, as reported by The Indian Express.

The state government has given students scoring between 20 and 35 two options: they can pass with a remark on their marksheet or choose to reappear for the exam and score above 35 to pass without any remarks.

According to media reports, teachers believe that many students aiming for careers in arts, humanities, or literature would have no issue opting for the first choice, as the remark would not affect their higher education plans.
