The Supreme Court, after addressing concerns regarding certain foreign medical graduates not receiving internship stipends, has decreed that these students should be treated equally to their Indian counterparts. This decision was reached during a hearing where a group of doctors highlighted instances of medical colleges neglecting to provide stipends to foreign medical graduates during their internships, as stated by a two-judge bench.

On Monday, the bench directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to provide information regarding stipend payments to foreign medical graduates in three designated colleges such as:

- Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha,

- Dr Laxminarayan Pandey Government Medical College in Ratlam,

- Employees State Insurance Corporation Medical College in Alwar.

Underlining the significance of stipend disbursements, the court warned the colleges that failure to adhere to the previous directive on stipend payments would result in severe consequences. The bench specifically instructed the NMC and the medical colleges that differential treatment between MBBS and foreign medical graduates is impermissible. Further information on the matter was mandated to be provided by the institutions.

Earlier, on January 23, the Supreme Court had requested responses from both the NMC and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College after a petition filed by five foreign medical graduates. Moreover, the court mandated that the NMC and affiliated entities must ensure stipend provisions to such students throughout the entire internship, adhering to the standards set by other medical colleges. Presently, these students are undergoing their internship at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha.
