Mizoram Literacy Rate: Mizoram  has become the first state to achieve full literacy. Chief Minister Lalduhoma made the official declaration on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, during a celebratory event at Mizoram University in Aizawl, attended by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary and state education minister Dr. Vanlalthlana. The achievement is the result of years of sustained effort, community participation, and government initiatives aimed at eradicating illiteracy from every corner of the state.

The state, which already had a strong literacy base of 91.33% as per the 2011 Census, further strengthened its educational infrastructure through the ULLAS—Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society—and Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram schemes. These centrally sponsored programs targeted adults, especially those who had missed formal schooling. A comprehensive door-to-door survey identified 3,026 non-literate individuals, of whom 1,692 were enrolled in special learning programs. The collective efforts of a dedicated team of 292 volunteer teachers, including students, educators, and community leaders, ensured that every willing learner received the necessary support to become literate.

Community Mobilization and Volunteer Spirit:

The success of Mizoram’s literacy drive is rooted in its community spirit and cultural values. The volunteers, driven by a sense of duty and altruism, worked tirelessly to reach even the most remote areas. Their commitment was instrumental in mobilizing families and individuals, ensuring that no one was left behind. This collaborative approach not only bridged the literacy gap but also fostered a culture of lifelong learning and inclusivity. The state’s leadership recognized the contributions of both current and previous governments, as well as the relentless efforts of the volunteers and officials involved in the initiative.

Looking Ahead: Beyond Basic Literacy:

Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized that achieving full literacy is just the beginning. “As we celebrate this achievement, we also renew our commitment to sustaining literacy through continuous education, digital access, and vocational skill training,” he said. The state now aims to expand its educational goals to include digital, financial, and entrepreneurial literacy, ensuring holistic development for all citizens. Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary lauded Mizoram’s achievement, calling it a model for the rest of the country.

“Today, we proudly declared Mizoram as the first fully literate state under the visionary Ullas Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. Congratulations to the people of Mizoram and Hon'ble CM @PuLalduhoma for this achievement,” Chaudhary posted on X.

“Special thanks to Hon'ble Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana for championing this cause. The Chief Minister was gracious in commending the work of previous State Governments as well in the remarkable journey of progress Mizoram has undertaken. May the Northeast continue to lead the way in building a Shikshit, Kushal, and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he added.
