National Teachers Day 2024: Teachers' Day is celebrated across India every year on September 5 to honor the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India. On this day, students find creative ways to celebrate and express their appreciation for teachers. The occasion serves to recognise and support teachers, highlighting their dedication and making them feel valued for their commitment to students.

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Teachers' Day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr Radhakrishnan was President of India from 1962 to 1967, his students and friends suggested celebrating his birthday on September 5. Instead of a grand celebration, Dr Radhakrishnan expressed a preference for the day to be recognised as Teachers' Day. As a result, since 1962, Teachers' Day has been observed annually on September 5.

Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Phule was a pioneering social activist who devoted her life to advancing gender equality and educating girls despite the challenges posed by traditional Indian culture. Initially lacking formal education before her marriage, Savitribai Phule became the first Indian woman to enter the teaching profession. Alongside her husband, she established numerous schools for girls in Maharashtra.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India and a renowned scientist, was a fervent advocate of education. He believed that beyond obtaining academic degrees, students should also develop their skills to achieve success in their careers and lives. Regarded as a visionary, Dr Kalam championed the integration of modern educational concepts with traditional ones. He promoted the pursuit of education for all, advocating for equal access to educational opportunities in both urban and rural areas.

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, a distinguished Indian reformer, was also celebrated as one of the nation's greatest teachers, known for his exceptional intellect. He founded the "Ramakrishna Mission," where his devotees and monks study and teach Practical Vedanta. Swami Vivekananda advocated for the Gurukula system, where teachers and students live and study together.

Rabindra Nath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore is a prominent Indian figure renowned for his academic contributions. He believed that learning through activities was an effective method for enhancing a child's physical and mental abilities. Consequently, Shantiniketan embraced a variety of physical activities such as theatre, tree climbing, fruit plucking, and dance, among others, to foster holistic development.

Chanakya

Also known as Vishnugupta and Kautilya, he was a notable Indian scholar from the fourth century. Renowned as a philosopher, jurist, and royal advisor to King Chandragupta Maurya, he authored two influential works: Chanakya Niti and Arthashastra. These books encapsulate his extensive knowledge and personal experiences, which he aimed to impart to others.
