NCERT Maths Mela: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a new Mathematics textbook for Class 5 titled “Maths Mela”, aimed at transforming how children engage with numbers. Rooted in the principles of NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023), the book focuses on hands-on learning, puzzles, and story-based problem solving to make the subject more approachable, relatable, and fun.

This shift reflects a major change in how primary education is envisioned in India—moving away from rote memorization to experience-based learning where mathematics is connected with real-life scenarios, curiosity, and creativity.

What’s New in Maths Mela?

Unlike traditional math textbooks, Maths Mela includes:

  • Puzzles and Games to develop logical thinking

  • Story-based Problems to encourage conceptual understanding

  • Real-Life Applications to link math with everyday situations

  • Group Activities and DIY Exercises to foster collaboration and hands-on experience

This dynamic format aims to reduce math anxiety and promote joyful learning among children. Each chapter is designed to make students explore, observe, question, and experiment—an approach well aligned with the competency-based education model.

When Will the Book Be Available?

Although Maths Mela and other new NCERT books like “Santoor” (English), “Veena” (Hindi) for Class 5, and “Poorvi” and “Malhar” for Class 8 are yet to be released physically or digitally, they have already been listed on Amazon and NCERT’s official website. The books will be published and distributed soon through both platforms.

This move is a progressive leap toward child-centric and activity-driven learning. With NEP 2020 reshaping the education landscape, resources like Maths Mela are likely to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world understanding in young minds—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
