NEET UG 2024 Exam: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has revised the tie-breaking procedure for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024. This change, announced just before the extended registration deadline on March 16, will significantly impact how candidates' rankings are determined in this highly anticipated exam. Candidates can check the NEET notification at exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.

The previous method of using the computerised draw of lots to resolve ties has been eliminated, reverting instead to the original rule of allocating ranks based on the number of correct and incorrect answers provided by candidates.

Traditionally, ties in scores among candidates were resolved through a computerised drawing of lots. However, this year, the NTA has opted to revert to the original method. Under this approach, candidates' rankings will be determined based on the accuracy of their answers.

According to media reports, the number of candidates registered for the NEET UG 2024 exam this year has exceeded 2.5 million, with approximately 1.3 million female applicants. Those aspiring to secure admission to top medical and dental universities across the country must now understand and navigate the revised tie-breaking system to establish their rankings. Furthermore, the stakes are high as performance in India's largest entrance exam directly impacts admission to prestigious medical institutes.

The exam conducting body has specified a tie-breaking procedure that will prioritise candidates based on their marks or percentile scores in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, in that order. Candidates will be ranked based on the proportion of correct and incorrect answers across all subjects, with particular emphasis on the aforementioned subjects.

This adjustment aligns with the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) statement last year, which introduced a new tie-breaking provision in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 (GMER-23). However, by eliminating the computerised draw procedure, the NTA aims to streamline the ranking process while ensuring fairness and transparency in determining candidate placements.
