NEET UG 2026 Cancellation: In one of the most significant disruptions to India's medical entrance system, the National Testing Agency (NTA), with the formal approval of the Government of India, has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination. The decision affects more than 22 lakh registered candidates who appeared or were scheduled to appear for the exam held on May 3, 2026.

The cancellation follows a confirmed paper leak; the Rajasthan Police's Special Operations Group (SOG) recovered a "guess paper" that matched approximately 140 actual exam questions, triggering widespread outrage and a formal investigation into an organised cheating syndicate.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now taken charge of the probe, with its mandate extending far beyond local cheating rings. Investigators will trace digital footprints of leaked materials that allegedly spread through encrypted messaging applications to identify the "masterminds" behind the syndicate. The NTA has pledged complete cooperation, handing over all examination records and technical data to the bureau.

For the 22 lakh aspirants caught in the crossfire, the government has made clear that no one will be financially penalised, fees already paid will be fully refunded, and the re-examination will be conducted using NTA's internal reserves at no extra cost to students.

CBI takes over: what the investigation means for students

The CBI's involvement signals that the government is treating this as a case of organised crime, not a routine administrative lapse. The bureau will investigate how leaked questions circulated on encrypted messaging apps, map financial transactions tied to paper leaks, and pursue those who profited from compromising the exam.

For students, this investigation is critical; its findings will determine how the re-exam is secured, what safeguards are added, and whether stricter anti-leak protocols will govern future NEET cycles. The NTA has assured full transparency and said updates will flow exclusively through official government channels.

No fresh registration, fee refund: what the NTA has officially stated?

The NTA has issued clear, student-friendly directives to prevent confusion during this transition period. All registration data, candidature details, and examination centre preferences from the May 2026 cycle will be automatically carried forward to the re-conducted exam. Students do not need to re-register or pay any additional fees. Key official guidelines include:

Registration: Your May 2026 registration stays valid. Do not fill out any new forms unless the NTA specifically instructs you to.

Fee Refund: Examination fees already paid will be fully refunded. The re-exam will be funded from NTA's internal reserves; no additional payment is required.

Admit Card: Fresh hall tickets with updated dates will be issued on the official website. Do not use the old admit card.

With the re-exam date still awaited, the most important thing for the 22 lakh affected aspirants is to stay calm, stay prepared, and stay informed through the right channels. The NTA has specifically warned students and parents to disregard unverified timelines and rumours circulating on social media. 

All official communications,  including the re-exam schedule and fresh admit card dates, will be published exclusively on nta.ac.in and neet.nta.nic.in. Students should bookmark these pages, keep their registered mobile numbers active for SMS alerts, and continue their syllabus preparation without interruption. Medical admissions for the 2026 session will not commence until after the re-exam results are declared.
