School Closed News: In light of a devastating cloudburst that occurred early today, October 4 causing significant damage in Sikkim, the state's education department has taken the decision to shut down both private and government schools in four districts. According to the official order, schools in the districts of Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi, and Mangan will remain closed till October 8.

“In view of the unprecedented emergency situation created by flooding of Teesta River, all government schools and private schools located in Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi and Mangan districts shall remain closed till 8th October 2023,” reads the circular from the Sikkim education department.

The state experienced a cloudburst today, resulting in a flash flood that has inflicted significant loss of life and property. According to the media reports, three civilian bodies have been recovered, while 23 Indian Army Jawans have been reported missing since morning. The Singhtam Foot Bridge spanning the River Teesta collapsed due to the overflowing river, causing damage to numerous Army installations along the Lachen Valley. Ongoing efforts are being made to comprehensively assess the extent of the damage caused by this natural disaster. Moreover, multiple segments of National Highway (NH) 10, which connects West Bengal to Sikkim, have been washed away, and several roads are currently blocked as a result.

'Spoke to Sikkim CM Shri Prem Singh Tamang and took stock of the situation in the wake of the unfortunate natural calamity in parts of the state. Assured all possible support in addressing the challenge. I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected,' PM Modi Tweeted.
