Tamil Nadu School closed: Heavy rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu has prompted school closures in multiple districts. District Collectors in Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, and Karaikal declared holidays for schools on Tuesday, November 19, due to the persistent downpours. While schools and colleges in Karaikal were shut, Thoothukudi authorities declared a holiday only for schools, allowing colleges to operate as usual. In Thanjavur, the district administration left the decision on school closures to individual school heads based on local conditions.

Heavy Rain Alert for Delta and Southern Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecasted heavy rains with thunderstorms across ten districts, including five in the Delta region and five in the south, between 7 am and 10 am on Tuesday.

Delta districts under alert: Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai.

Southern districts under alert: Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.

District Collectors, including B Priyanka Pankajam (Nagapattinam), P Akash (Thoothukudi), and T Manikandan (Karaikal), have urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety measures during the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Rain Forecast and Northeast Monsoon Impact

The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for Tamil Nadu, predicting moderate rainfall over the next five days. Authorities in the affected districts are on high alert as the northeast monsoon gains strength, driven by an atmospheric circulation over Kumari Kadal (Gulf of Mannar) and nearby areas.

The RMC has reported widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with isolated heavy rain expected in Delta and southern districts. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, is forecasted for the region.

Chennai Weather Update

In Chennai, partly cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected. The city’s temperature will range between 25°C and 32°C, with authorities advising residents to remain vigilant during this rainy spell.
