Fake University List: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a roster of fraudulent universities operating in India. The UGC has communicated with state government departments of higher education and principal secretaries, urging them to initiate suitable measures against these fake institutions.

In a letter to the VCs of these institutes, UGC secretary Manish Joshi wrote, “I would like to inform you that your institution figures in the list of fake Universities, as the institution is not a “University” within the meaning of Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, but engaged in the business of conferring degrees or using the word “University” with its name to defraud and cheat innocent students by awarding fake degrees. It has become a matter of concern as many students are becoming victims of the fraudulent act of your institution.”

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued an updated list of numerous fake universities. According to the September 2023 Fake Universities list posted on the Commission's official website, ugc.gov.in, the highest number of fraudulent institutions, numbering 8, are situated in Delhi. Following Delhi, there are 4 fake universities in Uttar Pradesh, 2 in both Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, and 1 each in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
