Uttarakhand School Holiday (10 July): The Chamoli district administration has declared a one-day holiday on July 10, 2026, for all government, government-aided, private schools from Classes 1 to 12, and all Anganwadi centres, following the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the district.
The precautionary order has been issued in view of the possibility of flash floods, thunderstorms, and lightning. District authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow all weather advisories until conditions improve.
Why Were Schools Closed in Chamoli?
The decision was taken after the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Chamoli and several other districts of Uttarakhand on July 10. Authorities said the holiday has been announced to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and Anganwadi children.
Flash Flood Risk Prompted the Decision
According to the National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin, some parts of Chamoli face a low to moderate risk of flash floods during the next 24 hours. Considering the weather forecast and the potential threat, the district administration declared a precautionary closure of educational institutions.
Which Institutions Will Remain Closed?
The holiday applies to all government, aided, and private schools from Classes 1 to 12, along with all Anganwadi centres across Chamoli district. District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar, who is also the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, issued the closure order and directed officials to ensure strict compliance.
Advisory for Parents and Residents
The district administration has urged parents and residents to stay updated with official weather advisories, avoid rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas, and refrain from unnecessary travel during the heavy rainfall period. Citizens have also been asked to cooperate with local authorities until the weather situation improves.
