As the BJP seems to be falling short of the majority mark amid the counting of votes in the Lok Sabha polls, the NDA allies appear to be in a ‘kingmaker’ position. The saffron party is currently leading in 237 of 543 seats, 35 seats away from the magic number. The current political scenario has now put the NDA allies, especially the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal (United), in a decisive position. As per reports, PM Modi has dialled TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu amid the troublesome situation of the BJP.
JDU supremo Nitish Kumar portrays a history of switching sides and now all eyes are on him whether or not he will act as BJP’s saviour. Moreover, the INDIA bloc might also mobilise its top brass to persuade Kumar to join back their front as the latter’s party is currently leading in 15 seats Besides, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu is equally important for the Opposition as his party is currently leading in 16 seats.
Jayant Chaudhary-led RLD, which joined the NDA camp days after Nitish’s flip, has also become a key player in deciding BJP’s future.
However, it's too early to predict anything but psephologists have already started brainstorming on possible scenarios which could unfold after the exact numbers are out. Many said PM Modi might lose his might and will have to rely on his allies. The NDA constituents might also negotiate for lucrative offers from both sides.
The course of counting is indeed a nightmare for the BJP, which had set an ambitious target of 400 seats for the alliance. The Congress seems to be performing exceptionally well in the Hindi belt where it had lost its footprints. The party seems to be doing significantly well in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. Besides Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) emerged as a dark horse which gave a major jolt to the saffron party in Uttar Pradesh.
Yadav’s political manoeuvring and his bonhomie with Congress seem to be gaining significant ground in Uttar Pradesh. The INDIA bloc is currently leading in 42 of 80 seats, with Congress leading in seven seats. All eyes would now be on the BJP’s allies as to whether they will give walkaway to the BJP or a big ‘khela’ is in the offing.
