The Ramayana is touted as one of the two great Hindu epics, alongside the Mahabharata. It tells the story of Rama, one incarnation of the god Vishnu. It represents Rama serving as a model of devotion to dharma, or virtue. The epic saga of Rama and Sita also teaches humans about culture, kindness, sacrifice and all that is required for a family and society to work. The Mahabharata and the Ramayana are two of India's greatest epics, and the lessons they teach are passed down from generation to generation through the characters that inhabit them.
The introduction of Ramayana for the majourity of us was done through Ramanand Sagar. The popular Television show featured Arun Govil, Deepika Chikhalia, Sunil Lahri, Arvind Trivedi and Dara Singh as Lord Rama, Sita, Laxman, Ravana and Hanuman. The show's re-run garnered a lot of TRP during the pandemic.
Now, filmmaker Om Raut has made a movie based on Ramayana. Titled as Adipurush, the movie has an ensemble star cast, including Prabhas as Lord Rama, Kriti Sanon as Sita, Sunny Singh as Laxman, and Saif Ali Khan as Ravana. The makers unveiled the movie's teaser a few months ago and it received a lot of criticism for the poor VFX, character look of Ravana and even the costumes. Now, in a recently released trailer, the makers have done the said changes, thereby making it bigger and better. The trailer of Adipurush is being praised globally, with fans anticipating the movie's release. Adipurush will hit the theatres on June 16, 2023.

We've seen films in the past where the writer or director expertly blended the Ramayana concept with a family drama or an action-thriller and presented it in a fresh way. Let us have a look at some of the films based on the concept of the epic saga:
Raavan:
Raavan, directed by Mani Ratnam, is an adaptation of Ramayana. The movie focuses on Abhishek Bachchan’s character Beera (based on Ravana). It centres on the section of the Ramayana where Sita is kidnapped by Ravana. The characters played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, and Govinda are modelled by Sita, Rama, and Lord Hanuman, respectively.

Hum Saath Saath Hain:
Starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, Mohnish Bahl and others in the lead role, the Sooraj Bharjatya directorial was a huge blockbuster. The story, showcasing modern-day retelling of Ramayana, centers on a joint family and its values and togetherness, who grow apart after a misunderstanding.

Similar to the Ramayana, the younger boys disobey their parents' wishes and remain by their devoted older brother when the latter is banished from the family as a result of misunderstandings. It makes us think of the Ramayana scene where the servant Manthara fills Kaikeyi, Dashratha's wife, with unfavourable things about Rama so that Bharat might rule.
