Actor Vijay Varma is gearing up for the release of his upcoming web series IC 814- The Kandahar Hijack. The actor recently reflected on his path of learning from the real Captain Devi Sharan (his character in IC 814). Vijay said that the Kandahar Hijack took an unexpected turn when he met the real Captain Sharan while training in a flight simulator to authentically portray the role.
Vijay Varma recalls his 'unexpected' meet with real Captain Devi Sharan
Vijay Varma said, “I had the opportunity to meet the real captain at the flight simulation centre where I was practising how to fly—or at least pretend like I could. Just when I was starting to feel a bit confident, Captain Sharan joined me and showed me the exact manoeuvres.”
Vijay went on to state, “He described how low they were flying, to the point where he could read the street hoardings, making it seem like the plane could crash at any moment. But something inside him knew he could pull it off. Just sitting with him in the cockpit, watching him operate, gave me the insight I needed to hopefully recreate that magic on set.”
Vijay also shared a picture with Captain Devi Sharan on his Instagram handle and wrote, “Real and Reel Captain Sharan When I first met the captain.. I was taken in by his pleasant smile and his simplicity.. and then I saw a scar on his neck.. I asked him about it.. he simply and politely said “woh hijackers ki gun 7 din tak yahi ragadti rahi toh wound ho gaya tha jo heal nahi hua”I froze. He smiled.I knew I was talking to a real life hero.It was such a huge honour to get to depict Captain Devi Sharan on screen. His efforts to save lives amidst chaos and dread is truly inspiring! A tale of resilience and honour.. of critical thinking and duty.. of patience and hope and most of all.. bravery. We salute you captain.”
For the unversed, Vijay Varma, director Anubhav Sinha, and Captain Devi Sharan visited the Institution for Aviators in New Delhi, engaging in an interactive session with students about Netflix's IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. They discussed the hijacking's technical and emotional aspects, followed by a Q&A session, leaving a lasting impact and deeper appreciation for the story.
IC 814- The Kandahar Hijack will be released on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
