Aamir Khan is known for his dedication to getting every detail right in his performances, but even he admits that he slipped up once in Dangal — and only Amitabh Bachchan noticed it.
Released in 2016 and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal became a massive blockbuster, earning praise for Aamir’s powerful portrayal of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. When asked recently which of his performances he holds dearest, Aamir confidently mentioned Dangal. However, he also revealed that there was one particular moment where he unintentionally stepped out of character — something that only Amitabh Bachchan caught.
Aamir shared this anecdote during the Red Lorry Film Festival in Mumbai, where he appeared alongside filmmaker Mansoor Khan. Reflecting on his career, he acknowledged that while he considers Dangal his best work, one mistake still stands out in his mind.
Amitabh Bachchan’s sharp eye caught the moment. Aamir recalled asking him for feedback after the film, and Amitabh pointed out, "Ek shot mein aap character se bahaar aa gaye" (You were out of character in one shot). Aamir was surprised and asked which shot it was.
He explained, “During the wrestling scene, there’s a moment where I stand up and say ‘Yes!’ — but that was a mistake. Mahavir Singh Phogat would never say ‘Yes.’ It felt too modern, too much like Mumbai slang. The character would have said something like ‘Wah!’ or ‘Shabash!’ instead. ‘Yes’ didn’t fit him. I didn’t realize it at the time, and it stayed in the final cut.”
It’s a rare admission from an actor known for his near-flawless performances. Aamir, who celebrated his 60th birthday recently, hasn’t had a theatrical release since Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. He’s now gearing up for his next project, Sitare Zameen Par, a follow-up to his beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, which marked his directorial debut.
