Angry Young Men, a new docuseries, is set to delve into the extraordinary creative partnership between two of Bollywood's most iconic screenwriters, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Premiering on August 20 on Amazon Prime Video, this three-part series promises to shed light on the journey and legacy of the legendary duo, famously known as Salim-Javed.
Produced by an impressive collaboration of some of Bollywood's biggest names—Salman Khan's Salman Khan Films, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment, and Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti's Tiger Baby Films—Angry Young Men is directed by Namrata Rao, who has previously worked on acclaimed films like Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Ishqiya, Band Baaja Baaraat and Kahaani.
Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar are credited with revolutionizing Indian cinema in the 1970s through their collaboration on films that became synonymous with the era, such as Zanjeer, Sholay and Deewar. These movies introduced the "angry young man" archetype, which not only resonated with the masses but also played a significant role in establishing Amitabh Bachchan as a superstar.
The docuseries will explore how the duo's work brought a fresh perspective to Indian storytelling, making a lasting impact on the industry and society at large. Salim-Javed were the first screenwriters in India to achieve star status, crafting characters and dialogues that have become etched in the collective memory of audiences.
Salman Khan, who serves as an executive producer on the project, shared his personal connection to the story, recalling how he witnessed his father, Salim Khan, and Javed Akhtar create cinematic magic together. "Their love for cinema redefined heroism for an entire generation, leaving behind a legacy of cult classics. Angry Young Men is a tribute to their creative brilliance and the profound impact they've had on Indian cinema," said Salman.

Farhan Akhtar also emphasized the significance of Salim-Javed's contributions to Hindi cinema. He noted that their journey was marked by grit, passion, and a determination to transform the role of the writer in the film industry. "They succeeded and in doing so, left an impression that still lives on generations after," Farhan remarked.
Zoya Akhtar echoed these sentiments, highlighting how the series captures the essence of Salim-Javed's rise from small-town beginnings to becoming two of the most influential figures in Indian cinema. "The story of Salim-Javed’s dynamic journey starting out from small towns to exploding onto the silver screen and how they put their hardships, their heartbreaks, and their swag into their cinema," she added.
Manish Menghani, Director of Content Licensing at Prime Video India, described Angry Young Men as a special project for the streaming platform. He expressed excitement about partnering with Salman Khan Films, Excel Media & Entertainment, and Tiger Baby Films to bring this compelling story to viewers. "This docuseries showcases how Salim-Javed not just transformed cinema but also left a lasting impact on society," Menghani said.
