Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has confirmed his decision to move away from Mumbai, citing his dissatisfaction with the current state of Bollywood. In a recent interview with The Hindu, he expressed his frustration, calling the Hindi film industry “toxic.”

Kashyap, known for his unconventional storytelling and bold filmmaking, has been vocal about his disappointment with the industry’s growing focus on commercial success. He criticized the increasing pressure to create high-budget films, saying, “Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next ₹500 or ₹800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”

Earlier, in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, the filmmaker shared that he was “disgusted” with how the industry functions, lamenting that filmmaking has become more about profit margins than creative expression. He explained, “Right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about ‘how do we sell it?’ So the joy of filmmaking is sucked out.”

While Kashyap had previously hinted at moving to South India, sources now suggest that he has likely settled in Bangalore. The shift is motivated by his desire to work in an environment where artistic risks are encouraged rather than suppressed. “I want to stay away from film people,” he admitted, explaining his need for a fresh creative space.

His admiration for South Indian filmmakers is well known. He has often praised their ability to experiment with storytelling while still finding success. “I envy them,” he said, noting that their industry allows for creative freedom without the constant pressure of making films that cater only to box office numbers.

Despite stepping away from Bollywood, Kashyap remains actively involved in filmmaking. He is currently promoting Footage, a Malayalam film directed by Saiju Sreedharan and starring Manju Warrier. Originally released in August last year, the Hindi version of the film is set to hit screens on March 7, 2025. Additionally, Kashyap is set to appear as a fearless cop in Dacoit, a film being shot in both Hindi and Telugu. The movie stars Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles, though its release date is yet to be announced.
