AR Rahman, who is one of the biggest musicians in Indian Cinema, has always kept away his personal life from the limelight but still managed to make headlines for social and personal beliefs. The musician recently shared that he does not chill with his colleagues as he avoids drinking and smoking. The statement came after he was asked whether he spends some good time apart from work with Imtiaz Ali and Irshad Kamil. He was also asked what he does in his free time, to which he quipped that he likes to come to Cannes. Rahman attended the Cannes Film Festival 2024 to unveil the documentary, Headhunting to Beatboxing.
At the same event, Sucharita Tyagi asked Rahman about his brainstorming or jamming sessions apart from work with Imtiaz Ali and Irshad Kamil. He responded, “That never happens. I think there’s no chilling out because I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, so there’s no chilling. Clubbing for me is music.” Rahman was also asked about his free time activities, to which he replied “I go to Cannes. I’m not making any music. I’m just doing other things, so that’s in a way actually chilling out.”
AR Rahman and Imtiaz Ali collaborated on several projects including Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha and Amar Singh Chamkila.
Earlier, Imtiaz revealed the conversation with Rahman after the release of Chamkila. He told Galatta Plus, “I had an interesting conversation with Rahman sir. He called me soon after the release of Chamkila and he said that everyone was saying I am back. So where were you? He said people can be cruel. He wanted to prepare me to not feel bad when people say you are back because it also demeans what you have done before this. He also told me that every 2-3 years, people will tell you that you are finished. He said you have to be strong and one way to be that is to have your own analysis.”
Amar Singh Chamkila is a biographical drama based on the life of a famous Punjab singer known for making vulgar songs. The movie stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
